Matt and I attended the Ocean Beach Christmas parade earlier this month. OB, as it is known, is the beach community where Matt lived before I moved here, and works. He is hoping to return there soon, as living one mile inland is making him nuts. OB does have a special laid-back vibe. The Christmas parade is the big event of the year, second only to the famous marshmellow fight on the beach right after the fireworks on July 4th. I thought I'd share the carol lyrics from the parade. Not all of them, not "Jingle Bells, Dog Beach Smells" (there were three large dog contingents in the parade), but here's "Rocking Around the O.B. Christmas Tree". The tree is hung with beach balls and 45s.
Rocking around the O.B. tree
Have a bonfire of the beach
Marshmallows flung where you can see
Nobody's out of reach
Rocking around the O.B. tree
Le the holiday spirit ring
Later we'll drink some spirits, too
And do some off-key caroling
You'll get a sentimental feeling when we say
Jingle bells and Dog Beach smells
O.B. all the way
Rocking around the O.B. tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone's dancing merrily
In the old Obecian way.
